Running a Marathon For Dummies 评价:

I do own a few running and triathlon text books but they are pretty hard going and rather technical If you have read any other books in the Dummies series you ll know that they are extremely good at demystifying complex subjects I imagine I ll be referring to them a lot over the coming months. Running a Marathon For Dummies 读者评论:

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned runner, Jason Karp brings forth his information in the Dummies series. Many beginners make the mistake of training and/or running too hard instead of taking it slowly to reduce injury and burn out. As with the seasoned runner they can also do the same as they try to achieve their dream to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Karp stresses in his book that even though you may be experienced with training and racing, his information takes it one step further to help you seek your goal to actually run Boston. As an older runner you need to also be careful to the amount of miles you run and cross train each week. Remember baby steps to get to the huge step to finish a race regardless the length of the race. Cross training is not a high emphasis in this how to book. Try and get as much as you can from your running training as possible by increasing your distance each week and concentrate on that more than weights and cross training. He believes the more running you do the better. This is a point that I do not agree with. You cannot just run You need to incorporate cross training such as weights, biking, swimming and walking. You need to work the whole body in order to get stronger. Why would you not make your arms stronger? Don't they help us during a race, as they pump up and down to get us going? Riding a bike can also help reduce the impact that our feet and legs endure during our runs. While at the same time riding a bike increases our stamina. Aqua jogging also is a big plus for someone that has been injured due to shin splints, such as myself.
He believes that running form should only be utilized in younger runners which I find absurd. All runners regardless of your experience need to know what your form is and how to adjust it to reduce injury and increase performance. Karp also states that if you try and change your form as an older runner it would not be feasible since they are already set in their ways. He also writes that you can run through an injury and should only stop if you need surgery. Well if you stopped when you were injured you would not need surgery..would you?
I would like to add that I am a seasoned runner but there was a time when I was a beginner who took the first step off the couch and out the door. Karp comes off as being an elitist and people who do not have the training or endurance should not participate in a marathon. Quite frankly I was offended. I take great pride to see runners lined up in the last corral and kudos to them for trying to accomplish their dream to participate. Karp should just train Olympians and leave the novice out of it. Why he was chosen to write this book is beyond me.
There are many other books out there can can do a better job to train you to be in better shape. I would recommend Chi Running as a first step. For training plans I would suggest Hal Higdon's Marathon or if you are a run/walker any book by Jeff Galloway would do just fine.

First let me say I have a best marathon time of 2:35 and 10 marathons all under 3hrs. Ran college track and have run 1:13 half marathon. After grabbing this book I could not put it down . Everything from the beginner Is covered by the author . It's got everything you need to know to train properly for the 5k to marathon. The best part was it has information for all levels . Researched the author and was a member of the maccabi silver medal half marathon team last summer . Will use as a reference for my training. Next book I hope he adds chapter in revision for masters running
    A total hit
