No one had a better view of the events of April 14, 2013, than the actual runners participating in the 117th Boston Marathon. That’s the reason Runner’s World contributing editor Hal Higdon chose to look at the events of that fateful day from the perspective of those running the race. His newest book, 4:09:43 – Boston 2013 Through the Eyes of the Runners, focuses on 75 runners and their individual stories, collected uniquely through social media, such as blogs posted online, stories offered on Facebook, and e-mails sent to Hal himself. 4:09:43 may be the first book ever written about a major sporting event that was researched almost entirely through social media. On this special edition of Kinetic Connections, we feature a talk Hal gave about the book in which he reads select passages, details how the book came together, and the impact the bombings have had on the Boston Marathon.

HAL HIGDON has contributed to Runner's World longer than any other writer and is the author of 34 books.

He ran eight times in the United States Olympic Trials and won four World Masters Championships. He is one of the founders of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA).

HAL HIGDON has contributed to Runner's World for longer than any other writer, an article by Hal having appeared in that publication's second issue in 1966. Author of more than 36 books, including the recently published "4:09:43" about the Boston Marathon bombings, the best-selling "Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide" and a novel, simply titled "Marathon," Hal also has written books on many subjects and for different age groups. His children's book, "The Horse That Played Center Field," was made into an animated feature by ABC-TV. He ran eight times in the Olympic Trials and won four world masters championships. One of the founders of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), Higdon also was a finalist in NASA's Journalist-in-Space program to ride the space shuttle. The former training consultant for the Chicago Marathon, he answers questions online for TrainingPeaks, also providing interactive training programs. He has a Facebook page, "Hal Higdon's Marathon," and tweets @higdonmarathon. At the American Society of Journalist and Author's annual meeting in 2003, the Society gave Higdon its Career Achievement Award, the highest honor given to writer members. Not all of Higdon's book are about running. One Kindle favorite is "The Crime of the Century" about the Leopold and Loeb case. After a recent visit to Egypt he wrote a Kindle Short: "Egypt 2012: From the Pyramids to Tahrir Square." An art major at Carleton College, he lately has begun to sell and exhibit his paintings in a Pop Art style. Hal's wife, Rose, hikes, bikes, skis and supports him in his running and writing. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
