About the Author
Sam Murphy is a leading health and fitness writer with a weekly column in the Guardian. She has written six fitness books, including Marathon: From Start to Finish and The Real Woman's Personal Trainer. The Army Physical Training Corps (APTC) are the British Army's fitness experts and healthy lifestyle advisors. They have delivered physical training to the Army for almost 150 years, ensuring the British soldier is 'Fit for Life and Fit to Fight' at all times.

This is well planned to help even an absolute basketcase into a fitter person. My fitness level was abysmal and using the 4 week start up programs for running and strength has been a great help. There are easier forms of many of the exercises so that you can keep your repetition count to the number stated. Do the stretching on off days and within weeks you will increase stamina, strength and have more energy. There are three 12 week programs that can be used concurrently or if you already have a higher level of fitness you can start at a higher level. I started at the beginner 4 week start up programs and will keep you posted as to my progress. This is solid, practical and lacks fluff. I highly recommend this book.

 

The British Army places a lot of emphasis on basic fitness for every soldier regardless of their profession, something perhaps that a lot of people not familiar with the Army under estimate. Becoming as fit as the average British soldier by itself is something to be proud of.

Any former ex-British military serviceman will be familiar with a lot of the content of this book. This book provides a very straight forward and educational approach to getting fit without the need for relying on a personal trainer.
