Keep on running - the training shoe business试读:
Introduction
When did you last buy a pair of training shoes? Since purchases of trainers and other sports-related footwear now account for over 20% of all shoe sales in the UK, there is a good chance that you have bought a pair for yourself or for a member of your family in the past year.
If you have bought a pair, why did you buy them? Did you buy them to do sports, to look good, to be comfortable, to please your child, to be like everybody else?
If you have not bought a pair, why not? Is it because you don’t like them, because you have several pairs already, because you don’t take part in sports, because they’re too expensive, because you don’t want to look like everyone else?
Whether you have bought a pair or not, as the video showed, training shoes are a commonplace artefact of modern life. Like them or loathe them, it is hard to avoid them, in the street, on the bus, at work, at school, in the gym, in the club. You can buy them for your baby or for your grandfather, you can buy them with sling backs or platform soles, you can probably even buy them for your dog or cat.
But how often do you think about why we buy what we do, why particular brands are available to us and others not, why they cost what they do, why we want to wear certain shoes rather than others?
Training shoes provide a good example of how making and selling a popular product works, what affects it, and what it itself influences.
Taking a detailed look at the training shoe business should therefore allow you to find answers to some of these questions.
