I am a former runner who is just starting to get back into running again after a long break. Reading this book was so enjoyable that I struggled to put it down. It is not so much a how to book but more of an essay on what runners experience on many levels during a run.
This is one of the all time classic fitness books. Full of common sense and personal experience, Dr. Sheehan was filled with wisdom on physical fitness. He talks of working out and balancing physical work with mental activity. The secrets to staying young are in this book.

I bought this book many years ago and read it then (sometime in the early 1980's). I am now ordering as a gift for a nephew as he is a distance runner in his mid-30's. I am re-reading it and I can only say if anyone can order any type of copy, I highly recommend doing so. Dr. Sheehan was such a great runner, writer, and philosopher about life. It is too bad he died on Nov. 1, 1993 as he was truly an amazing and insightful human being. He is sorely missed to this day.
